Ocean Conservation
The oceans of the world are under attack. Chemical and physical water pollution, habitat destruction, and climate change are quickly destroying the most biodiverse habitats on our planet. Although coral reefs account for a small percentage of our seas, they serve as home to a massive percentage of sea life. Without acting fast and on a massive scale, we are likely to lose these underwater paradises forever.
At Padma, we have a three-part focus to help protect and restore our oceans.
1. Reef Restoration
There are many methods developing around the world to restore coral reefs. We support and work together with North Bali Reef Conservation (NBRC) in artificial reef construction and deployment to rebuild a destroyed section of coral reef off the coast of the rural northeast coast of Bali, Indonesia. NBRC recently completed a study which showed a near equal level of biodiversity in the restored section of reach as opposed to the nearly lifeless section of nearby seabed yet to be restored. The efforts are working better than anyone could have hoped for.
2. Plastic Clean Up and Recycling
The ultimate solution to stopping the plastic pollution problem is to stop using non-biodegradable plastics. In the meantime, efforts to clean plastics from oceans, beaches, waterways and to transform waste into useful materials are proving to be effective methods to stem the damage. We have invested in a number of small scale recycle centers that melt plastic waste and transform it into building materials. These recycle centers are run by local communities who do not only receive the benefit of building materials, but also an added source of income, and education for future generations on the nuisance of plastic waste.
3. Marine Habitat Research and Study
In order to protect our oceans, an understanding of species interactions, habitat stressors, and the efficacy of solutions must be constantly studied, accessed, and shared across the planet. Padma supports and actively participates in a number of ongoing research programs around the world that are not only looking at individual marine habitat systems, but are part of the global interchange of research to discover the best methods to preserve our oceans.
Check out Jack Searson's video about one of our conservation partner organizations, North Bali Reef Conservation. We have worked with NBRC since 2018 and look forward to many years to come with their awesome organization.
